For the love of Ikebana!

♦ Vintage mid century Japanese vase, a piece of utterly captivating art pottery in glossy black ceramic. Original Toyo label on bottom.

Ikebana is one of the traditional arts of Japan, and has been practiced for an impressive 600 years (and counting). Ikebana developed from a Buddhist ritual with an offering of flowers to the spirits of the dead. Ikebana eventually achieved the status of an art form independent of its religious origins, though it continued to retain strong symbolic and philosophical overtones. The first teachers and students were priests and members of the nobility. However, as time passed, many different schools arose, styles changed, and ikebana came to be practiced at all levels of Japanese society.

♦ The vase is in very good condition with only a needle mark and a minor scrape hardly noticeable, no cracks or chips. It is deep black and has a glossy finish and this organic, unusual shape, a stand out piece on it’s own or with a flower arrangement of your choice.

♦ Measurements: height approx. 12,5 cm, depth 5 cm and width 17,5 cm.
